Moverman Oren 02.17.10 222x300 Kurt Cobain biopic in bloom with The Messenger writer director Oren MovermanOren Moverman is moving on to his next tragedy.

Coming off two Oscar nominations for his directing debut, “The Messenger,” Moverman is in negotiations to rework the screenplay for Universal’s untitled Kurt Cobain project and direct it as well. Screenwriter David Benioff (“Brothers”) first took on the project in fall 2007 for Working Title and Reveille.

Material on the life, music and 1994 suicide of the Nirvana singer-songwriter will come at least partially from Charles R. Cross’ 2001 biography, “Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain.” Universal originally purchased the life rights of both Cobain and his widow, Courtney Love, who had already optioned the film rights to the Cross book.

Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan and Ben Silverman are producing. Love is an executive producer along with her lawyer Howard Weitzman.

In 2005, writer-director Gus Van Sant made the fictional rock ‘n’ roll drama “Last Days,” which echoed Cobain’s drug-addicted final trajectory. Benioff did firsthand research with Cobain’s old friends in Aberdeen and Seattle to inform the drafts of his Universal script.

Moverman, who is repped by WME and New York Office, and his “Messenger” co-writer Alessandro Camon scored Oscar nominations for their original screenplay. Woody Harrelson also earned a nomination for supporting actor as one of two soldiers back in the States who deliver the news of soldiers’ deaths to their families.

Moverman has also co-written the scripts for “Married Life,” “Jesus’ Son” and “I’m Not There.”
