hurtlockerdemoman Hurt Locker lawsuit: What about 1993s Demolition Man?As if “The Hurt Locker” needs any more bad press, along comes a bomb disposal expert threatening to sue the studio and the producers in New Jersey for millions of dollars over the Jeremy Renner character.

According to the lawsuit, along with a claim that he was cheated out of financial participation in the film because the character Will James was based on him, Master Sgt. Jeffrey Sarver claims that he coined the phrase “hurt locker.”

Bullshit. Just ask Sylvester Stallone. (A good policy in most situations.)

Uh, ever see a little futuristic epic called “Demolition Man”? No? Well, consider yourself fortunate. But I have seen it. And the single most memorable moment in that stupefying film, which I then started to pepper my speech with, is this line from Sly as John Spartan:

“I’m gonna go down there, I’m gonna find Phoenix, and I’m gonna put him in a hurt locker.”

Awesome. Just an awesome phrase, no doubt.

And I can’t say that screenwriters Daniel Waters, Robert Reneau and Peter M. Lenkov invented it. But I can say that since the film was released in 1993, it’s highly unlikely that Master Sgt. Sarver unearthed that little verbal jewel either.

For a guy going to court to get credit where he claims it is due, this seems like an important piece of information to digest.
